With news of NFL draft prospect Michael Sam taking a brave step and coming out of the closet so gracefully, telling reporters he wants to “own his truth,” it got us thinking about other, arguably less (or more?) graceful ways of owning one’s truth.
We all remember coming out. The awkward conversations, the euphoric sense of relief, and for many, the pain of rejection or, if we were lucky, celebration. Maybe we even got laid. Who knows?
We live in the age of the internet now, and like all things, even coming out has found its memes.
Two of our favorites? Cakes and cards. The birthday party staples have become the expressive canvas for many gay and questioning youth, and they aren’t shy about posting the evidence on Tumblr.
First, the baked goods:
1. The surprise party
And guess what? I’m also dabbling in porn! You’re the best, Mom.
2. The Bake Sale
Yes, teacher. I brought enough gay for the entire class.
3. The Riddle
Hint: it’s me.
4. The “Feeling Left Out” Riddle
“If you get Beyonce, mimosas, interior design and Puerto Vallarta, I at least want my own cake. Can you help me bake it though?”
5. The “Needs No Explanation”
Frosting speaks louder than words.
6. The Sugar-Free
Just because I made you a cake to tell you I’m trans doesn’t mean we all need to get fat. And when I saw we I mean you.
7. The Cross-Over
Laurel, dear–I’m disappointed. Do what you will with your ladyfingers, but you mustn’t–I mean ever–apologize for puns. Never wafer.
And the cards:
8. The Post-it
For the executive pansexual on the go.
9. The Pop-up
And behind door #1 we have…your fabulous new gay son!
10. The I’M NOT DEAF
If you’ve got something to say, say it to my lesbian face.
11. The “Making Education Fun”
WHAT??!
…SO YOU’RE GAY?
OHH I GET IT, YOU’RE GOING THROUGH A PHASE, AREN’T YOU…
IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!
12. The Blitz
Best mom ever. And seriously, your room smells like a burp threw up in a fart.
