– Atlanta radio host Tommy Sotomayor addressing the “trend” of young black boys rapping about gay sex, as seen in the video below (totally NSFW):
While Sotomayor’s comments are narrow-minded, misogynistic and no matter what disclaimer he puts ahead of them, blatantly bigoted, they’re not the most surprising part of this story. This, after all, coming from the man who called Jason Collins a “liar” and a “fraud” for being on the downlow. We’re used to that brand of crazy. But hearing these young boys rapping about giving dudes oral sex just about gave us a mild stroke.
First of all, their age is obviously an issue and we can only hope they’re not speaking from experience. Second of all, when did rap become so queer? These kids are rapping pretty hard about being gay, something the world of hip hop is still struggling to embrace. With queer black rappers like Cakes da Killa, Le1f and Mykki Blanco, do these kids represent the future of rap? Third of all, there’s nothing wrong with androgyny or the 80s as evinced by Grace Jones and gay black rapper Zebra Katz:
Fierce.
